Is Éclair the right WordPress alternative for you?
It all depends on what your site needs to do. The rule is simple: if a specific need requires a WordPress plugin, stick with WordPress; otherwise, Éclair will save you time, give you speed and spare you the upkeep.

|---|---|
| You want a business website, a blog, a portfolio or a sales page | You sell online (cart, payments, inventory) |

| You’re done managing plugin updates | You want to choose from thousands of ready-made themes |
| Your host only gives you a small database, or none at all | A team or an agency already runs your site on WordPress |

Why is Éclair faster than WordPress?
On every visit, WordPress loads its core, its plugins and its theme, queries the database, then assembles the page. A caching plugin can skip that work, provided you choose one, configure it and keep it up to date.
Éclair does the opposite by default: each page is generated once, then served directly from a file, without loading the application. The result, measured locally on the demo site: a 0.7 ms response time and 100/100 on Lighthouse. CSS is inlined in the page, images are converted to WebP on upload, and the public site has just one 1.2 KB script.
Security: the real cost of plugins
According to Patchstack, 11,334 new vulnerabilities hit the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, 42% more than in 2024. 91% came from plugins, 9% from themes, and only 6 from WordPress core itself. So the core is solid: it’s the pile-up of plugins that leaves a site exposed.
Éclair removes that attack surface: there are no plugins to install, so there’s no abandoned or vulnerable plugin either. With no database, SQL injection is impossible. Logins are protected by Argon2id, brute-force protection and two-factor authentication, and the code went through an offensive security review: 17 vulnerabilities found, all fixed.
What WordPress does better than Éclair
Being honest helps you choose well. WordPress keeps some real advantages:
- An ecosystem like no other: tens of thousands of plugins and themes, for almost every need.
- E-commerce with WooCommerce, member areas, online courses or forums.
- Visual page builders, to lay out a page with your mouse.
- A huge community: thousands of agencies, freelancers, tutorials and support forums.
- Comments and multisite, built in.
If your project relies on any of these, stay with WordPress: Éclair doesn’t try to do everything; it does the essentials, very well, with no upkeep.
How do you switch from WordPress to Éclair?
For a business website or a blog with a few dozen pages, plan on half a day to a full day. There’s no automatic importer: you recreate your content with smart paste (headings, lists, tables and bold text become clean blocks), upload your images to the media library, and keep your old URLs with the 301 redirect manager.
The complete method, step by step: migrate from WordPress to Éclair. And to get started: the installation guide.
Questions about Éclair and WordPress
Is Éclair a good WordPress alternative for a small site?
Yes. For a business website, a blog, a portfolio or a sales page, Éclair gives you caching, SEO, GEO and security without plugins, in a 402 KB archive, and installs in 3 minutes on shared hosting.
Will my search rankings suffer if I leave WordPress?
Not if you keep your URLs or create 301 redirects to the new ones. Éclair generates a sitemap, structured data and canonical tags, and notifies Bing through IndexNow every time you publish.
Can I use my WordPress themes or plugins with Éclair?
No. Éclair is a different piece of software, with its own customizable theme. Most of the features WordPress plugins provide (SEO, caching, forms, security, backups) are already built in.
Does Éclair cost anything?
No, Éclair is free and open source (MIT license). Only the optional AI assistant uses your own API key, billed by the provider based on usage.
Does Éclair need special hosting?
No. Standard shared hosting with PHP 8.1 or later and Apache or LiteSpeed is enough, with no database. See, for example, installing on o2switch.
